Abstract

Developing strong arguments requires critical thinking, however many EFL students struggle with this skill. To address this gap, the present study aims to investigate how students construct arguments by employing a qualitative content analysis approach. Specifically, this study examines expressions of attitude, a subsystem of Appraisal theory, within ten argumentative essays written by undergraduate English students at UIN Syekh Wasil Kediri. The findings reveal 293 attitudinal expressions, where appreciation was most dominant (56.3%), followed by judgement (31.1%) and affect (12.6%). This indicates that students prioritized evaluating the value of phenomena over expressing personal emotions, though high word repetition suggests a limited vocabulary. The findings are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing a systematic mapping of EFL learners' evaluative language patterns and offer practical implications for educators to explicitly teach a wider variety of attitudinal words to strengthen students' writing skills. By situating the analysis within an Indonesian Islamic university context, this study seeks to advance scholarly discourse on interpersonal meanings and language pedagogy in EFL writing.
