Abstract

This research investigated the effectiveness of Webtoon in improving EFL students’ reading comprehension at SMKN 3 Kediri. Many students still experience difficulties in comprehending narrative texts due to low motivation and limited engagement, particularly when conventional instructional materials are used in the classroom. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the use of Webtoon is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design consisting of two groups: an experimental group taught using Webtoon and a control group taught using the school’s printed textbooks. The sample of this study consisted of 70 tenth-grade students divided into two groups: 35 students in the experimental group (Tata Busana 1) and 35 students in the control group (Tata Busana 2). The data were collected through pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed using ANCOVA through SPSS. The findings showed Webtoon has a statistically significant effect in improving students’ reading comprehension based on the analysis. The experimental group’s mean score increased from 49.03 on the pre-test to 65.14 on the post-test, while the control group’s mean score increased from 43.77 to 51.89. The result of the ANCOVA analysis showed a significance value of 0.019 (p < 0.05), indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Webtoon is effective in improving EFL students’ reading comprehension.
