Abstract

Speaking is one of the most essential skills in learning English, as it reflects students’ ability to communicate ideas fluently and confidently. However, many students still struggle with limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and lack of exposure to authentic English input. One alternative way to overcome these challenges is through listening to English songs, which not only provide authentic linguistic input but also offer enjoyable exposure to vocabulary, pronunciation, and expressions. Considering this, the present study aims to examine the correlation between the intensity of listening to trending English songs and the speaking ability of the tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Kota Kediri. This study employed a quantitative research method with a correlational design to investigate the relationship between the intensity of listening to trending English songs and speaking ability of the tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Kota Kediri. The population consisted of the tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Kota Kediri, and a sample of 100 students was selected using cluster random sampling. The data were collected through two instruments: a questionnaire consists of 19 closed-ended question to measure the intensity of listening to English songs and a speaking test to assess students’ speaking ability in terms of fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and organization of ideas. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation through SPSS 27. The results revealed a very strong positive correlation between the intensity of listening to English songs and students’ speaking ability (r = .805, p < .001). This finding indicates that students who listen to English songs more frequently, for longer durations, and with greater attention tend to achieve better performance in speaking English. In conclusion, the study highlights that the intensity of listening to English songs is strongly correlated with students’ speaking ability, indicating that students who listen more frequently, for longer durations, and with greater attention tend to demonstrate better speaking performance. The findings also provide valuable implications for teachers and students to consider improving intensity of listening to English songs as a supplementary resource in learning English speaking skill among EFL students.
