Abstract
This research investigated students’ perceptions of using Wattpad and their motivation in writing recount texts, focusing on integrative and instrumental motivation based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Gardner’s theory. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data were collected from 163 students of SMAN 1 Mojo through a 28-item Likert-scale questionnaire and interviews with 10 students. The findings showed that students’ perception of Wattpad was moderate; they enjoyed using it for self-expression but considered it less useful for academic writing. Integrative motivation (M = 2.65) was slightly higher than instrumental motivation (M = 2.63), indicating that students were more emotionally than academically motivated. Pearson correlation analysis also revealed moderate positive relationships between students’ perceptions and both types of motivation, suggesting that more positive views of Wattpad tend to be associated with higher motivation to write. However, these relationships indicate tendencies rather than causality. Overall, the study suggests that Wattpad can be an effective tool to enhance students’ motivation and writing skills when supported by teacher guidance and integrated into classroom learning.
