M.Pd. (2) Toyyibah, SS, M.Pd Keyword: CIRC, Achievement, Reading Comprehension Teaching English as the first foreign language is much needed in every levels of education especially in Indonesia. The aim is to develop spoken and written communication capability which is reflected in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Those four basic language skills are equally essential for students to learn and it is emphasized on reading. They have many difficulties in reading English text due to the different English features from their mother tongue, Bahasa Indonesia. CIRC Method makes students' more understand and be easy to comprehend reading text. It also improves the students' motivation in learning English. The title of this research is "The Effectiveness of using CIRC in increasing students' achievement in reading comprehension". The objective of this study is to know whether there was an increasing students' achievement in reading comprehension of SMP GUPPI Kunjang. To achieve the purpose of this study, the writer designs a quasi-experimental research. The subject of this research is the students at the second-year students of SMP GUPPI Kunjang in the second semester in academic year 2012/2013 the subjects are divided in two classes, VIII B as control group and VIII C as experimental group. To collect the data, the writer used the pre-test and post-test at experimental and control group. The result of the tests was analyzed by ANCOVA trough SPSS. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant at (p) .000 < 0.05 level. Since the significant value was smaller than 0.05 statically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, then the alternative hypothesis was received. It means the students who were taught by using CIRC are effective. Therefore, the hypothesis "using CIRC to the second-year students of SMP GUPPI Kunjang" is accepted. Based on the result of the test, the researcher concluded that using CIRC in increasing students' achievement in reading comprehension to SMP GUPPI Kunjang is effective. The researcher suggests the teachers of junior high school to use this approach as an alternative in increasing students' achievement in reading comprehension.
