Abstract

This study aims at analyzing EFL learners' acquisition of written English through the measurement of processability theory that was introduced by Pienemann. Processability theory is one of paradigm that focuses on how language learners develop their grammar in second language. There are five stages of processability theory; they are lemma procedure, category procedure, phrasal procedure, sentence procedure, and subordinate clause procedure. These five stages have to be acquired by language learners, and they could not skip these five stages because each stage is beneficial to other stage. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to describe how far the students acquire English using the procesability theory. The subject of the research is the tenth grade students of SMA Terpadu Abul Faidl. There are six students chosen as the subject of the research. The students are divided into three groups; they are the students in high level, intermediate level, and low level. To know their ability, the researcher observes the students' result of report in English subject. The researcher collects, classifies, and analyzes the data from the test that was given to the students. In doing the test. the tenth grade students are asked to answer some questions related to processability theory. Then, the researcher analyzes the resuit, and makes the conclusion based on the data found. The finding of this research is the tenth grade students of SMA Terpadu Abul Faidl have acquired three stages of processability theory, they are lemma procedure, category procedure, and phrasal procedure. However, the tenth grade students have not acquired the fourth stage of processability theory that is sentence procedure. I nerefore the students have to improve their ability in composing a good sentence, and they will also acquire the fifth stage that is subordinate clause procedure.
