Abstract
Indonesian students often found the difficulty when they read, especially in English text. Reading an English text requests them to have an adequate knowledge of the language and a certain set of skill. Some difficulties are because of the lack of consideration in applying the appropriate technique in teaching learning process. In addition, they have less vocabulary. So when they read, they do not understand what they read about. Especially at second grade students of MAN Kediri II Kota Kediri. Based on the problems above, the researcher wants to implement Sticky Note Strategy in reading class. Sticky note is one of the strategy used in teaching English to improve the students' achievement especially in reading skill. Sticky note reading requires students to be active participants in the reading process because they have to "do" something as they read. After that, students discuss in a small group and share their knowledge from the text. Thus, this thesis is conducted to improve reading skill on second-grade students of MAN Kediri II Kota Kediri by using Sticky Note Strategy. The research design used in this study is a quasi-experimental research. The researcher needs two group in this research. There are experimental group and control group. The experimental group is the subject will be taught using Sticky Note strategy, while the control group is group of the subject which will be taught conventionally. The sample of this study are class XI IPA 2 and XI IPA 3 of MAN Kediri II Kota Kediri. The class consists of 40 students each class. And the instrument of this research is test. The result of this research shows that the students who were taught by using sticky note strategy got higher mean. In pre-test, the mean score of the experimental group was 56. 42 and the mean score of the control group was 55. 42. After getting the treatment for the experimental group they got post-test. The mean score of the experimental group was 68. 18, and mean score of the control group was 67. 75. It means that sticky note strategy gives an effect on teaching reading. The result of ANCOVA shows that the distribution data in dependent variable is normal. It can be seen from the significant value 0. 185>0. 05. And the result of significant value is 0.009. It means that p < 0.05 (0.009 <0.05). It can be conclude that there is a difference between the experimental and control groups. The result of the test between subject-effect is significant at 0. 009 < 0. 05. Because the value is smaller than 0. 05, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis. It means that teaching reading using sticky note strategy is effective.
