Abstract
Writing is one of skill that consider as a difficult skill for some students. There are many techniques that the teachers can use to solve the students’ problem in writing skill. The objective of this study is to investigate whether there is significant difference on the students’ recount writing achievement taught by clustering technique and the students who are taught by using free writing technique at the first grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kediri. In order to achieve the objective of this study, the researcher used quasi experimental design. The subject of this study is the first grade of students at SMA Negeri 1 Kediri in academic year 2019-2020. It is done by comparing two classes. The experimental class is class X-B and the control class is class X-H. The experimental class is taught by clustering technique. Beside that, the control class is taught by free writing technique. In this research, the researcher gave pretest and post-test to both of groups. Then, the result of the test was calculated by using ANCOVA. In the result of pre-test, the mean score of the experimental class is 70.33. While the mean score of the control class is 70.90. In the post-test, the mean score of the experimental class is 81.40. While the mean score of the control class is 74.57. Then, in the result of ANCOVA assumptions show that the distribution is normal that is p (0.548) > (0.05). Then, the homogeneity variances from both of groups is equal accross class (0.107 > 0.05). There is no interaction between covariate and independent, as evidenced by significant the value is 0.913 > 0.05. Then, there is a relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable, as evidenced by the significant value is 0.000 < 0.05. Then, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant value is 0.000 < 0.05. It means clustering technique is effective in teaching writing recount text.
