Abstract

The objective of this study is to know the students ability before getting treatment, and the students after getting treatment then whether the students who are taught with folktale movie have better achievement than the students who are taught with English module in conventional method. This investigation was aimed to identify the effectiveness of folktale movie on the improvement of writing skill of the students of MA Hasyim Asy’ari Jogoroto Jombang. This research learns writing narrative text using folktale movie. This research was quantitative research with used quasi experimental design. The participants of the study are class X MIA 1 as experimental group that using folktale movie as a media and class X MIA 2 as control group that uses English module in conventional teaching. The total of participants of this research is 60 participants. The data was obtained through pre test and post test to know the students’ ability. Then the data was counted using SPSS. The result of the data shows that the mean score of experimental group before getting treatment is 72.05, and the mean score of pretest control group is 74.13. Then, after the experimental group getting treatment, the post test score of experimental group becomes 83.18 and control group is 76.30. Then, statistical test used to test the hypothesis was Mann Whitney U test which used data of post test. The data showed that Z score is -4.981. The score of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 < 0.05. If the score of sig < 0.05, it means there was significant difference between two groups or which means Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Then based on the Cohen’s standard of effect size, the score of effect size is 0.643, and based on the Cohen’s Standard of Effect Size “0.5 < d < 0.8 is medium category”. It means 0.5 < 0.643 < 0.8 includes in medium category of effectiveness. It was found that the result of media folktale movie was effective with medium category on the improvement of writing skill of the students of MA Hasyim Asy’ari Jogoroto Jombang.
