Abstract

Islamiyah, Merry Andiny. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Kahoot Application as a Supporting Tool in Teaching Reading Comprehension. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri, Advisor: (I) Dr. Ary Setya Budhi Ningrum, M. Pd. and (II) Bahruddin, S. S, M. Pd. Keyword: Reading Comprehension, Kahoot Application, Supporting Tool This research on the effectiveness of using Kahoot Application as a tool in teaching reading comprehension of 8th grade students at MTsN 2 Kediri. Kahoot is a game-based learning platform designed to increase student engagement and motivation through interactive quizzes and competitions. The use of Kahoot in English classroom allows students to actively participate in learning while making the process more enjoyable. After implementing Kahoot as a learning tool, students appeared more enthusiastic, engaged and confident in answering comprehension questions related to Procedure texts. Students became more involved in class activities and their ability to understand the content of the text improved significantly. The objective of this study is to know whether there is any significant difference between students taught by Kahoot Application and those taught by Google Forms as suppoting tools in their reading comprehension. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the use of Kahoot is effective as a tool in teaching reading comprehension, especially in understanding procedure texts among 8th grade students at MTsN 2 Kediri. The design of this study is quasi-experimental research with two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using Kahoot, while the control group was taught using Google Forms. The population in this study consisted of 8th grade students at MTsN 2 Kediri, and the sample was taken from two classes, VIII-F and VIII-H, each consisting of 35 students. The data were collected using tests, including a pre-test and a post-test. Data analysis was conducted using the Mann Whitney U test in SPSS version 25.0 due to the data were not being normally distributed. The post test results showed a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. The mean score of the experimental group is 93.83, while the control group had a mean score of 73.26. This indicates that the students who were taught using the Kahoot achieved higher scores than those who were taught using Google Forms as tools. The significance value of the Mann Whitney U test is 0.000, which is less than 0.05. This confirms that the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of Kahoot is effective as a tool in teaching reading comprehension.
