Abstract
In learning speaking ability, the students often find some problems. It was not their native language causes them difficult to use foreign language. They are afraid to make a mistake in one of conversation and lack of confidence within themselves. One of the reasons why students still have difficulty mastering speaking ability was because the use of old learning media applied by English teacher and the goal was not gotten yet. The aim of this research is to find out whether or not animated video is effective in teaching speaking for the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kandangan especially in genre of recount. The design of this research was quasi-experimental because the researcher cannot take the sample randomly. The population was the students of class VIII SMPN 1 Kandangan. The samples were two classes that named experimental and control group.The experimental group was class VIII D that consisted of 35 students, meanwhile the control group was class VIII E that consisted of 36 students. The researcher used test as the instrument of the research. The format of the test is oral test to analayzed the data, the researcher used Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) by SPSS Program 23.0 version. The result of this research showed that the data was normally distributed. It was proven by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov significant value of the pre-test of the experimental group was .070 (p > α 0.05) and for the control group was .154 (p > α 0.05). Meanwhile, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov significant value of the post-test of the control group was .200 (p > α 0.05) and for the experimental group was .095 (p > α 0.05). The homogeneity variances test shows that (p) was.828(p>α 0.05). The homogeneity regression (Slope) shows that (p) was .423 (p>α 0.05). The relationship between covariate and dependent variable was linear at 0.000 (p<α0.05). Then, the result of ANCOVA showed that (p) was 0.000 (p<α 0.05). It was enough evidence to reject H0 and accept Ha. Based on the finding, the researcher concludes that Animated Video is an effective media in teaching speaking.
