Abstract
This paper presents a study aimed at improving the eighth grade students writing skills, specifically focusing on their ability to create recount text. Writing is essential skill yet hard to be master. There are some challenges in writing such as vocabulary mastery, generating ideas, transforming ideas in to a text etc. To address students’ challenges in writing, this research proposed concept map as structured approach to help them to write. In this study, the classroom action research (CAR) approach was employed to collect and analyzed the data. Data were collected through writing test, interview, and observation. The data was collected at the eight-grade of SMP Islam Sultan Agung Plosoklaten that consisted of 28 students. The criteria of success included average score 75 and 75% students pass the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM). The result shown strong improvement from preliminary test, the average score was 59.89 with only 17.86% students passed the test (only 5 students passed). Moreover, after the application of concept map the average score was 81.07 with 89.29% students passed the test (25 students passed). In conclusion, concept map is helped the students in writing.
