Abstract
Speaking is one of the most important skills in learning a foreign language, especially English. This skill reflects the ability to express and convey ideas and feelings orally. However, many students still face difficulties in developing their speaking skills due to limited practice opportunities and low self-confidence. This situation is worsened by the use of traditional teaching methods, which tend to be monotonous and ineffective in encouraging students to communicate fluently. Therefore, innovative learning media are needed, one of which is technology-based learning applications. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Praktika.ai application in improving students’ speaking skills at MA Nurul Islam Lampung. This research employed a quasi-experimental design involving pre-tests and post-tests administered to two groups, the experimental group and the control group. The population of this study consisted of students from class XI A and XI B at MA Nurul Islam Lampung. The sample was taken from two classes, consisting of 36 students who were taught using the Praktika.ai application, and class XI-B as the control group, consisting of 35 students who were taught using picture media. The instrument used in this study was a speaking test assessed based on five aspects: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 23. The results showed that the data were normally distributed. Based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the significance values were as follows: pre-test for the experimental group p (0.196), pre-test for the control group p (0.176), post-test for the experimental group p (0.200), and post-test for the control group p (0.200). All values were greater than α0.05, indicating normal distribution. The Levene’s test showed a significance value of p (0.422) > α (0.05), indicating homogeneity of variance. The homogeneity of regression test yielded p (0.504) > α (0.05), which means there was no interaction between the covariate and the independent variable. Furthermore, the ANCOVA analysis showed a significance value of p 0.000 < α = 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the groups. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. There is a significant difference in speaking skills between students who are taught using the Praktika.ai application and those who are taught using pictures. The use of Praktika.ai positively affects students' speaking skills.
