Abstract

Listening is one of the most important skills in English learning, however it can be difficult for students to recognize native speakers' accents and speaking speeds. Teaching effective listening requires more than just playing recordings; it demands strategies that actively engage students and replicate real-world listening scenarios. This study discusses the significant difficulties that tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Purwoasri have in learning listening comprehension, a critical ability in developing the English language. Conventional teaching approaches frequently fall short of increasing student involvement and offering authentic listening experiences, which can result in low motivation and low levels of achievement. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of using podcast media in teaching listening skills to grade X students at SMAN 1 Purwoasri. This study used a quasi-experimental approach with two complete groups: a control group of 35 students at SMAN 1 Purwoasri and an experimental group of 34 students. To find out their first and last listening comprehension levels, both groups completed a pre-test and post-test with 25 questions each. While animated video media were used for instructing the control group, podcast media were used to instruct the experimental group. Data from the pre-test and post-test results were collected following the treatment phase, and statistical techniques were used for analysis. Descriptive statistics were employed to identify central tendencies, and an Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted using SPSS Statistics Version 25 to determine the statistical significance of any observed differences in learning gains between the groups, while controlling for initial differences in pretest scores. This finding shows a significant increase in students' listening comprehension ability in the experimental group taught using podcast media, compared to the control group. The mean post-test score for the experimental group was 85.03, while the control group scored 83.53. The results of hypothesis testing showed a statistically significant difference of the two groups at 0.026 < 0.05. In conclusion, this study confirms that the use of podcast media is an effective approach to teaching listening comprehension for tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Purwoasri, which offers a viable and useful alternative as a complement to traditional methods.
