Abstract

Aini, Reza Amanda Nur. 2025. “The Effect of Use Elsa Speak Application to Improve Student’ Speaking Skill at MAN 3 Nganjuk”. Thesis. Departement of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute of Kediri. Advosors: (1) Dr. Ary Setya Budhi Ningrum, M.Pd. (II) Dr. Sri Wahyuni, M.Pd Keywords: Speaking skill, Elsa Speak, Hello Talk, Pronunciation, MALL Speaking is paramount in mastering a foreign language, particularly English, as it directly demonstrates one's capacity to articulate thoughts and feelings verbally. Many students, however, struggle to develop these skills, hampered by scarce practice opportunities and a lack of self-confidence. This issue is often compounded by traditional teaching methods, which can be uninspiring and fail to foster fluent communication. Consequently, there's a clear need for innovative learning tools, especially technology-driven applications. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the Elsa Speak application in enhancing the speaking proficiency of students at MAN 3 Nganjuk. This research employed a quasi-experimental design involving pre-tests and post-tests administered to two groups, the experimental group and the control group. The population of this study consisted of students from class XI-MIPA I and XI-MIPA 2 at MAN 3 Nganjuk during the 2024/2025 academic year. The sample was taken from two classes, consisting of 30 students who were taught using the using ELSA Speak, while the control group used HelloTalk. The instrument used in this study was a speaking test assessed based on five aspects: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 25. The study found that both ELSA Speak and HelloTalk positively impacted students' speaking skills, as evidenced by increased post-test scores. The ELSA Speak group achieved a mean score of 71.13, while the HelloTalk group scored 60.80. These results indicate that although both applications were effective, ELSA Speak demonstrated greater overall efficacy. The hypothesis that ELSA Speak would be more effective than HelloTalk was accepted. This superior outcome is attributed to ELSA Speak's structured features, such as real-time pronunciation feedback and guided lessons, which contributed more significantly to improvements in pronunciation, grammar, and fluency compared to HelloTalk's less structured, communication-focused approach. In conclusion, ELSA Speak proved more impactful in enhancing students' English-speaking performance.
