Abstract

Qurroti, Athi’illah. 2025. “Students’ Perceptions on the Role of the English Speech Program in Students’ Speaking Skills and Motivation at MTsN 2 Kota Kediri”. Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisors: (I) Erna Nurkholida, M.Pd. (II) Bahruddin, S.S., M. Pd. Keywords: Students’ Perceptions, English Speech Program, Speaking Skills, Motivation, MTsN 2 Kota Kediri Speaking ability is one of the important skills in English learning as it shows students' ability to communicate meaningfully. This research aims to : (1) describe the students’ perceptions of the role of the English Speech Program in their speaking skills, and (2) describe the students’ perceptions of the role of the English Speech Program in motivating them to speak English. The methodology applied in this research is case study, by collecting data through observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. Observations and questionnaires were used to describe the classroom conditions and perceptions. Interviews and documentation are used as supporting instruments to explore students’ views more deeply. The research subjects were 29 students who participated in the English speech program. The interview was conducted with 15 students and 1 English teacher, while the questionnaire was distributed to all 29 members of the English Speech Program and consisted of 15 items. This research was conducted at MTsN 2 Kota Kediri which is located at Jl. Sunan Ampel No.12, Ngronggo, Kec. Kota, Kota Kediri, East Java. Based on the findings, the results of the study show that this program provides students with opportunities to actively practice English through various activities such as speeches, role plays, storytelling, and others. This program contributes to improving students' self confidence, enriching their vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammatical structures. Additionally, it enhances students' motivation to learn, both intrinsically such as the desire to speak fluently and extrinsically such as encouragement from teachers and the school environment. Although there are challenges such as differences in ability and low self confidence among some students, these can be minimized through supportive approaches and a conducive environment. Overall, the English Speech Program plays a role in developing students’ speaking skills and encouraging their motivation to speak English.
