Abstract
Kumala, Ika Mar’atul. 2025. The Analysis of Character Building and Role of Parents in “Turning Red” Movie. English Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Kediri. Advisor: (I) Dra. Nurul Ain., M.Pd. (II) Dr. Dewi Nur Suci, S.S, M.Pd. Keywords: Character Building, Parental Role, Turning Red The research aims to identify the character-building traits demonstrated by Mei Lee, examine the representation of parental roles, and explore their influence on Mei Lee’s development. The theoretical framework combines character education values from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud), parental role theory by Prabowo et al. (2020), and Baumrind’s (1967) parenting style theory. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were collected from the “Turning Red” movie through documentation and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that Mei Lee develops seven key character traits: honesty, discipline, hard work, curiosity, friendliness, love of peace, and responsibility. Furthermore, Ming Lee, Mei Lee’s mother, plays an essential role in shaping her daughter’s character. She demonstrates five parental roles educator, facilitator, companion, motivator, and role model which significantly influence Mei Lee’s emotional resilience, independence, and personal growth. Despite applying an authoritarian parenting style that often creates conflict, Ming Lee’s guidance still fosters positive character development through discipline and responsibility. The study concludes that Ming Lee’s parenting plays a crucial role in shaping Mei Lee’s character, influencing her emotional resilience and personal growth. While her authoritarian approach creates conflicts, it also instills discipline and responsibility. This research highlights the significance of parental guidance in character development and suggests that a balanced approach between discipline and emotional support is essential.
