Abstract

Faruq, Ahmad. 2024. The Effectiveness of Using Mime Game in Teaching Speaking Skills to The Students of SMP POMOSDA. English Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Kediri. Advisor: (I) Dr. Ary Setya Budhi Ningrum, M.Pd. (II) Dr. Sri Wahyuni, M.Pd. Keywords: Teaching Speaking, Mime Game, The Students Language learning is challenging. Consistent effort is required to ensure progress over time. Games can motivate and sustain students' interest in learning, making the process enjoyable and meaningful. Games also provide a practical context for using language effectively, rather than merely focusing on theoretical learning. The purpose of this study is to determine whether teaching speaking skills through mime games is effective for junior high school students at SMP POMOSDA Nganjuk. This research adopts a quasi-experimental quantitative design, which allows for comparisons between experimental and control groups. The subjects consist of eighthgrade students at SMP POMOSDA, with a total of 35 students each of class: class VIII-O (experimental group) and class VIII-L (control group). The experimental group was taught using mime games, while the control group was taught without them. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests, and the results were analyzed using ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance) with SPSS 21. The results of the normality test indicate that the data are normally distributed (p > 0.05). The homogeneity test shows equal variance (p = 0.563 > 0.05). Moreover, there is no significant interaction between covariates and the independent variable (p = 0.194 > 0.05). The ANCOVA results reveal that the significance value is lower than 0.05 (p = 0.023 < 0.05), indicating that mime games significantly improve speaking skills. Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted, demonstrating that teaching speaking skills using mime games is effective.
