Abstract

One of the most important skills in learning a language is reading. Reading can be the main pillar that supports the teaching and learning process. The GIST strategy is one of teaching reading strategies which can be alternative in teaching reading. This research is aimed to explain the implementation of GIST Strategy in teaching recount text on eighth grade of MTSN 2 Kota Kediri, and investigate the benefits of implementing the GIST Strategy in teaching recount text on eighth grade of MTSN 2 Kota Kediri. The research used descriptive qualitative study to explore the specific activity in teaching English. The subjects of this study are an English teacher of MTSN 2 Kota Kediri and 34 students of the excellent class on eighth grade at C class. The researcher used observations, interviews, and documentation analysis as data collection techniques. Based on research findings, the teacher implemented the GIST strategy well in teaching recount text. The researcher found that classroom teaching activities are applied by teacher in teaching recount text. Classroom teaching activities include pre-activity, whilst activity, and post-activity. Additionally, the researcher found that the teacher implemented the GIST strategy to teach recount text in some steps as proposed by Herrel & Jordan (2008) and Cunningham (1982). Furthermore, the implementation of the GIST strategy has positive benefits both on teacher and students at MTSN 2 Kota Kediri. The teacher showed that the GIST strategy eases content delivery, increases efficiency in material delivery, provides structured assessment, increases engagement and interaction with students, and addresses learning difficulties. Besides, the students told that the GIST strategy is better understanding, improvement in summarization ability, enhancement in writing ability, time saving, effective in learning, engagement with the material, and enhanced ability to explain concepts.
