Abstract
Todays, teaching speaking English in school becomes not common as the data in the filed says that students have learnt English for twelve years, but they can’t achieve good speaking performance in the end. The students still face many problems related to implementing the speaking English performance. Thus, this study is conducted to answer some cases in the field, such as 1) what are students’ speaking problems according to the teacher’s perception? 2) what are the speaking problems encountered by students? 3) how is the implementation of English camp? and how does English camp solve the students’ speaking problems? This study uses the qualitative approach (case study) in describing the implementation of English camp. The participants of English Camp 2023 at UIN Khas Jember are chosen as the research participants such as 15 participants, 4 committee, 2 lecturers and 2 facilitators. Observation, interview, and document review are chosen as the data collection method. The triangulation is used to validate the data. The process of processing the data is by using condensation, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The finding of this study reveals that 1) The lecturers’ perception on students’ speaking problems consist of lack of knowledge, environment support, and language anxiety. 2) The students’ perception on their speaking problem includes lack of vocabularies, self-confidence problem, grammar understanding, difficult to transfer the first language to English, no English environment, and pronunciation problems. 3) The English camp activities that solve the students’ speaking problems are English area/English Day, Vocabulary memorization, Punishment, Follow-Up Forum of introduction, Movie review, Debate simulation, Literature circle and final explanation. And 4) The contributions of English camp in solving the students’ speaking problem can be formed as English environment, Self-confidence boosting, Vocabularies Enrichment, Public speaking practice, and Motivation of learning. The existence of this study significantly updates and confirms the previous similar research on the implementation of English camp in solving the students’ speaking problems through the various speaking activities. For Further research on the similar topic, it needs to focus more on the English area implementation by doing much more interaction with the Camp participants and the committee as the stick holder of the agenda. By this, the next researcher will directly experience on how this English area is implemented.
