Abstract
This research is conducted to know codes in daily conversation used by learners of Modern Islam Boarding School As-sakienah Indramayu. The writer analyzes two research problems: kind of codesused by learners of As-sakienah, and factors influence their codes in daily conversation. The subjects of the research are learners of As-sakienah Indramayu. The researcher uses three research instruments: the researcher, participant observation, and informal interview. The researcher is the first key instrument who does all of the process in finishing the thesis. Participant observation is one in which the researcher takes part in the action, saying, recording, and observing the reactions. It is done to obtain the data related to the research problem such as kind of codes used by learners of As-sakienah. Informal interview is applied in the research to obtain the data and information about the factors influence their codes in daily conversation. Based on the participation observation, the writer finds the kind of learners' code. Learners used metaphorical code switching, situational code switching, and code mixing in the term of word, phrase, repetition and clause when they are having conversation or communication in informal situation as class, room, mosque and other. But, the most common code that used by learners is code mixing. While situational code switching, and metaphorical code switching is rare used by learners of As-sakienah in their daily conversation. Based on the informal interview, it is known that the learners use code switching and mixing in their conversation because of factors such as: lacking of vocabulary, forgetfulness, getting a shock, preferring to Arabic language than English language, presence of third person, spontaneous, and respecting to old people. But, the most common factor that influences the learners' code is lacking English vocabulary.
