Abstract

Reading comprehension is the important ability and the key to understand any kind of information in written text. However, many Indonesian students still find difficulties to get the comprehension of reading in English. Therefore, graphic organizer strategy can be the option as teaching strategy since it has the character to breakdown the abstract concept into the concrete concept and also provides the media which can be used as a tool to review and strengthen memory which those points are important to help students can understand the text easier. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of graphic organizer strategy to enhance students’ reading comprehension at 10th grade of MAN 2 KEDIRI. The method used in this study is quasi-experimental where the experimental class is taught using graphic organizer strategy meanwhile the control class is taught using skimming strategy. The data of this study is collected by using pre-test and post-test. The findings of this study show that the ANCOVA result is 0.014 < 0.05 which means there is significant difference between students who are treated by using graphic organizer strategy and students who are treated by using skimming strategy. Furthermore, the researcher finds out that students become able to breakdown some points to comprehend the reading like generic structures, language features, main ideas, implied meanings, and detail information from the text into visual representation. Therefore, it can be concluded that graphic organizer strategy is effectively engaged students’ reading comprehension of 10th grade in MAN 2 KEDIRI.
