Abstract
The cover is the first page that every person looks before reading the textbook. The importance of the cover can help people to know the content or decide whether to read or not. This study is aimed to analyze the types of visual grammar used in Indonesian Senior High School English textbook’s covers and how visual grammar is represented in Indonesian Senior High School English textbook’s covers. This study used a descriptive qualitative design with social-semiotic analysis. The researcher analyzed by using visual grammar theory proposed by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen. The data collected from BSE (Buku Sekolah Elektronik), Erlangga publisher, MEDIATAMA publisher, and Yrama Widya publisher website based on 2013 curriculum. The data is 6 textbook’s covers. The data was analyzed by checklist adapted from Larissa D’Angelo’s checklist based on visual grammar theory. After analyzing the data, the researcher checked the validity of the research by doing investigators triangulation. The researcher found three types of visual grammar used in Indonesian Senior High School English textbook’s covers namely representational meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning. The representational of the visual grammar in Indonesian Senior High School English textbook’s covers based on 2013 curriculum was generally represented by representational meaning which used narrative process, and conceptual process. In addition, interactive meaning is represented by contact, social distance, and attitude. Furthermore, compositional meaning is represented by information value, framing, and salience.
