Abstract

Listening is one of the most important skills in English language learning. It is considered as receptive skill, in which students need the ability to receive spoken language. Listening is language skill that should be learned by students of MAN 1 Kediri, it is because most of the students have difficulties in listening comprehension based on the interview. So, one way to solve these problems is using an alternative media in English listening process. This media can stimulate and activate the students’ knowledge in order to improve student listening achievement. Based on that problem, to create an appropriate media in teaching listening process, the researcher decided to conduct the research on the use of video animation. In this research, the researcher used Classroom Action Research. This action research was conducted in two cycle. The procedure of every cycle in this research consisted of preliminary study, planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation checklist, interview, listening test and scoring rubric as the instruments. The result of this research shows video animation could improve students’ listening skill. The students’ listening skill improved after the implementation of video animation by interpreter of the percentage of students’ achievement in listening a biography text in video animations. The percentage of the students who get score ≥78 was 23.33% (7 students) with average score 69.13 in preliminary study, while in the first cycle, the students who get score ≥78 was 46.66% (14 students) the average was 70.43. But it was improved in the post-test (cycle 2) that the students who got score ≥78 was 80% (24 students) with the students’ average score was 78.8. Based on the result of the study, the researcher concluded that students’ listening skill can be improved through video animations. Therefore, it is recommended that the teacher should apply video animations in teaching listening process.
