Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of texts in their text book at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some students could not understand about the content of reading text and identify the detailed information of the text, so the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The purpose of this research was to know the using GIST strategy to improve reading skill of the seventh grade students of the SMPN 1 Pagu. The researcher used classroom action research design. The subjects of the research were 32 students, consisted of 14 males and 18 females of the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Pagu 2017/2018. The researcher acted as an observer. There was one cycle which in every cycle consisted of three sessions. There were two instruments used to collect the data in this study, such as observation and test. The researcher used reading test as the instrumentation of the research where the students were asked to read a descriptive text based on the topics given to them. Then, the criteria of success are if 80% of students get score at least 75 and if the average score is at least 75. The result of this research was the majority of the students’ improved their reading comprehension through the GIST strategy. It can be seen from the mean score of pre-test 64, by the percentage of the successful is 15.6% (5 students out of 32) pass the test. And the mean score of post- test 77.9 by the percentage of the successful is 84% (27 students out of 32) pass the test. Thus, there was improvement 13.9 in the average score and 68.4% in the percentage of the successful students. It means that there was a significant difference of achievement in the test result before and after applying this method.
