Abstract

Writing is one of four basic skills in English that every students must master. Writing narrative text is a writing skill that is not easy to master, because students may struggle with constructing coherent texts, managing sentence structure, and using appropriate vocabulary. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of problem- based learning on students’ writing skill for the tenth graders. Especially, it sought to provide evidence that problem-based learning is more effective than conventional method; lecture in improving students’ writing skill in terms of content, vocabulary, and language use. The study employed a quantitative research method with a quasi-experimental design, involving an experimental class and a control class. To conduct the quasi experimental were taken from class X at SMAN 1 Nganjuk, with a total of 72 students: 36 in the experimental class (X9) and 36 in the control class (X7). The data are collected by using test, including pre-test and post-test. After got the data from pre-test and post-test, which were then analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test in SPSS due to the data were not normal. The result of the data analysis showed that there is difference between the experimental class and the control class in terms of content, vocabulary, and language use. In terms of content, the result of the Mann-Whitney test obtained a Z of -5.153 with a significance value of 0.000. In terms of vocabulary, the result of the Mann-Whitney test obtained a Z of -2.893 with a significance value of 0.004. In terms of language use, the result of the Mann-Whitney test obtained a Z of -4.830 with a significance value of 0.000. Since all significance values were less than 0.05, so based on the decision-making criteria H0 can be rejected and Ha cannot be rejected. It indicated that problem-based learning is effective for students’ writing skill in terms of content, vocabulary, and language use.
