Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of the activity is carried out "from home", e.g, work, study, etc. Hence, the Indonesian government implements Distance Learning (DL) system. IAIN Kediri utilizes the WhatsApp platform for online learning, allowing both students and lecturers to participate in teaching and learning activities. This study aims to explore the perceptions of English students regarding the use of WhatsApp groups in their essay writing class. This study used survey research design in analyzing and describing the data. It was collected through a close-ended questionnaire and interview. The researcher used SPSS to analyze the data of questionnaires. There were 55 of third semester English students in essay writing class participated in this study. The result of this study found that the students have a good perception towards the use of WhatsApp in essay writing class. It can be proven by the result of three aspect in close-ended questionnaire. First is personalization aspect that obtained the mean of 3.04. Second is the features aspect that obtained the mean of 3.05. Third is the aspect of essay writing class activity that got mean of 2.88. Then, the mean of all aspects is 3 that classified into good mean rank. Based on the result of interview, most of students agree that WhatsApp group can support them to improve their English learning activity, especially essay writing skills.
