Abstract
Conversation does not only happen in real life, but there is also in the fictitious world as in animated movie Big Hero 6. In every conversation there is principles to make the conversation success i.e Grice’s Conversational Principles, they are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner. In this study, the researcher wants to deliver a message to the readers that the characters in this movie sometimes flout the Grice’s conversational maxim principles. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to (1) identified the types of maxim flouted in animated movie Big Hero 6, and to (2) reveal the dominant of maxim flouted by the characters in animated movie Big Hero 6. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative approach to find out the aimed from the data, since the characteristics and features of qualitative approach fit with this research which the main instrument is the researcher and the data source of the data has explicit in the research. This research is qualitative since the data are collected, analyzed, and described in the form of words. The researcher found there are four maxims that are flouted by the characters in the movie. Although the characteristic of its utterance are all similar, the character who utters is in various. The characters of the animated movie Big Hero 6 made 55 conversation included to the four types of flouted Grice’s conversational maxims. The most dominant types of maxim flouted by the characters of this movie is flouting maxim of quantity since there are a lot of utterances that are does not explain to the point. As the consequent, the information that is uttered become less or even too much.
