Abstract

Speaking is a process between speaker and listener in which they have to understand each other or get the meaning through language pronunciation. Speaking skills require students to speak fluently and pronounce correctly. The general problems faced by students when learning speaking skills are lack of vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. Additionally, some students were less motivated to follow the learning process. This research was aimed to determine the use of rewards and punishments in improving the speaking skills of ninth-grade students at SMP Al Huda Kota Kediri. In conducting classroom action research, the researcher adopted the cycle model from Kemmis and McTaggart with a quantitative approach. The researcher implemented two cycles with three meetings each. The research cycle had several stages conducted by the researcher, which were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research were 29 ninth-grade D students. Data was obtained from observation and tests were given by the teacher to students. The tests carried out were preliminary, cycle one and cycle two tests. The data was analyzed using calculations through the mean formula with descriptive statistical techniques. The results of this research showed that giving rewards and punishments can improve students' speaking skills. It can be seen from the scores achieved by students in the preliminary, cycle one, and cycle two tests. In the preliminary test, the students got an average score of 49.76, with a learning success percentage of 13.79%. In cycle one, the mean score obtained by students’ was 64.79, with the percentage of success was 31.03%. The results obtained in cycle one did not show significant results. The researcher saw that in the first cycle, students were less interested in the form of reward given. So, in this second cycle, the researcher changed the form of reward from non-material (praise) to material (consumable items) to make students more attractive. The types of rewards are implemented in the form of praise and consumable items (chocolate and pens). While, the types of punishment implemented were preventive and repressive punishment. Then, the results of the second cycle test showed students got an average score of 78.21, with a learning success percentage of 82.76%. In cycle two, the percentage of learning success showed a significant increase, which means the criteria of success were achieved, so the research was stopped. From these results, the researchers concluded that providing rewards and punishments was effective in improving students' speaking skills. Additionally, the students were motivated by their friends who received rewards. In learning procedure text, students understood the material well. In addition, the students could pronounce words fluently and discovered lots of new vocabulary from the assignments given by the teacher.
