Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the level of anxiety and the major factors that caused the speaking anxiety of students in 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semester English Department IAIN Kediri 2019. Speaking is a main skill that have to mastered by learners, however the learners cannot achieve the great outcome in Speaking skill due to anxiety that occur in a lot of second language learners. Anxiety has become the major obstacle for learners in mastering second language. The design of this study was qualitative comparative design to get better understanding of the investigation. Qualitative comparative design is used in this study to know whether there are similarities or differences in this speaking anxiety phenomenon. In addition, to get the data, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire that obtained by Horwitz (1986). The subjects for this study are 105 students from 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semester, English Department IAIN Kediri 2019. The data collected from questionnaire that range by 5-points Likert scale was analyzed using SPSS 21 version for windows. The result indicated that the subjects are in average anxious level of anxiety. Out of 105 students, 71 students or 67.62% are indicate have average anxious level of speaking anxiety. Moreover, the major factor that caused students anxiety in the first place fear of negative evaluation by 35% with average score 324.6 which outcome from 105 students from all semester. This factor of anxiety followed by communicative apprehension with 33% and average score 310.7. And the last is factor that caused by test anxiety 32% with average score 302,2. Furthermore, it found out that there is no significance differences level of anxiety among those level of semester or cohorts.
