Abstract
Speaking is one of the basic skills which needs to be mastered in learning a foreign language besides writing, listening and reading. Speaking is a way to convey ideas between the speaker and the listener. Furthermore, speaking has been considered as the learners’ main goal in learning a languange, especially English. A large number of difficulties are often faced by the students in speaking, such as lack of vocabulary or grammar mastery, speaking anxiety, etc. Therefore, the researcher is interested to apply Impromptu Speech Method to overcome the problems above. The type of this research was quasi-experimental research and the method used was quantitative method. The main focus of this research was to find out a significant difference in the speaking skill between the students who are taught by using Impromptu Speech and who were taught by using Conventional method. Two classes of the second grade students of MAN 1 Kota Kediri in academic year 2018-2019 were chosen as the sample of this study. XI MIPA 1 as the experimental class was taught by using Impromptu Speech method and XI MIPA 2 as the control class was taught by using conventional method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS 22. The result of this study showed that the distribution of the data in the research is normal. It can be proven by the result Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that the significant value (p) > alpha (α), with p (0.200) > α (0.05). Meanwhile, the Levene’s test showed that F (1.72) = 3.562, p = 0.063. The result gave evidence that p (0.063) > α (0.05). It means that the variance of the experimental and control group is equal across groups. Then, the homogeneity of regression test (slope) showed that there was no interaction between the covariate and the independent variable. It was proven by the result of p > α, with p(0.984)>α (0.05). The last, there was relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable. It can be proven by the result of testing was F (1.71) = 1335,189, with p (0.000) < α (0.05). The result of the output ANCOVA showed the significant value was p(0.001)<α(0.05). Because of the significant value is smaller than 0.05, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and to the alternative hypothesis show. Based on the finding, the researcher concluded that teaching speaking by using Impromptu Speech Method is effective.
