Abstract

Test is one of good important components in teaching and learning process. A good English test will help students to learn the language by requiring them to study hard, emphasizing the objectives of the course and also showing them in which parts of the course they need improvement. There are the components which relate each other actually in teaching and learning process. They are goal, activity, and evaluation. Goal is the purpose of the lesson, activity is the process or activity in classroom itself, and evaluation is the procedure to measure the success of the goal and the activity. But, to make sure that the goal is achieved, we also need to measure that the test that we used have good quality. A test, which is intended to measure the students’ achievement, has to fulfill the requirements of good test such as validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discrimination index. So, the result can show the students’ achievement correctly. This research classified as descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the writer would like to focus her research on the English final test which is administered to eighth grade students of MTsN 1 Kediri in the academic year of 2018/2019. In conducting this research, the researcher collaborated with 50 students randomly as a sample. According to the result of the analysis the test there are 33 valid items and 7 invalid items. The reliability of the test is 0.706, so this test is reliable. From the point of view of discrimination power, there are 3 very bad items, 14 poor items, 17 edaquate items, and 6 good items. In the term of difficulty level there are 3 difficult items, 20 fair items, and 17 easy items. Based on the result above, the conclusion is there are only 12 items that fulfill the criteria of a good test items. The writer hopes that someday, the teachers should be aware about the characteristic of good test. Finally, the writer suggest that the test should not be used in the English final test, it can still be used if it’s been revised. The writer hopes that the result of this item analysis could be used as an example in analyzing other test item and encourages teacher to make good English test.
