Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the type of questioning strategies that the English teacher used and the application of questioning strategies during the classroom interaction in MTs Sunan Gunung Jati Kediri This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the observation in the classroom and interview. The data were taken from two English teachers at MTs Sunan Gunung Jati Kediri in order to find out what type of questioning strategies are used and the application of questioning strategies during the classroom interaction. The results of this research showed that the teachers used Procedural, Convergent and Divergent question. The English teachers actively using questioning strategies in the classroom interaction that they were asked the question to check about the students understanding about the previous material, to attract students’ attention, to support the students to contribute in the class and to motivate the students to learn. The English teachers applied questioning strategies to assess students' understanding of previous material, attract their attention, stimulate class interaction, and inspire them to study, English teachers asked questions before, during, and after class.
