Abstract
ABSTRACT Febiola Rizka, 2023. Investigating Challenges in Reading Narrative Text Faced by Year Nine Student of MTs Nurul Islam Kota Kediri. Hum,,M.Pd Keywords: Challenges, Narrative Text, Reading Comprehension This researches study is about investigating Challenges in reading narrative texts faced by year nine students of MTs Nurul Islam Kota Kediri. Reading is an important skill. This case understanding reading in English is not an easy task. learners must understand the meaning, know the vocabulary, find the main idea, making inferences, conclude and predict the reading. so that it makes students difficult in reading comprehension of text. Therefore the purpose of this study is to know the challenges of students in reading comprehension of narrative text in terms of challenges aspects and constributy factors. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The research subjects were 25 students of class IX-B. Data was collected by reading narrative text tests, interviews and questionnaires. Student test results were the main source of this data collection and were supported by interviews and questionnaires. To identify the most difficult challenges in reading narrative texts. The researcher divides the questions into 5 aspects, determines ideas, making inference, identifies reference, specific information, and understands of words. to analyze data using data reduction, data display, Drawing and verification conclusion. The test results showed that the majority of class IX-B students had difficulties in spatial information with the highest percentage of 72%. then define ideas with a percentage of 58%, then make inferences with a percentage of 42%. Identify references with a percentage of 33%. And the last is understanding of word with a percentage of 29%. In addition, based on student responses in the questionnaire, factors that contribute to student challenges are internal factors which include background knowledge, motivation, and student interests. While external factors include the environment, text complexity, and Teaching Techniques, and of the two factors that contribute the highest is the external factor with a percentage of 50.3% and one of the highest external factors is teaching technique with a score of 344.
