Abstract

This research aims to know the denotative and connotative meaning in William Bake‘s Songs of Innocence. Semantics as the study of meaning stands at the very center of the linguistic quest to understand the nature of language and human language abilities. Semantics not only concern with the study of meaning but also with the relationship between language and culture. Denotative meaning and connotative meaning: both of them are based on a relationship between words & world. This research was conducted based on Griffith's theory. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from 7 of William Blake's poems in the songs of innocence book. The authors used document studies to collect data. researchers analyzed the data based on the meaning contained. In this study, the researcher as an instrument must validate the extent to which qualitative researchers are ready to engage in research that will enter the learning space. to check the data or in other words used to make the data valid. The author uses investigator triangulation. From this data, the authors found that the connotative and denotative meanings used in William Blake's poems in the Song of innocence book vary widely, there are 40 words found to have connotative and denotative meanings. it can be concluded that connotative and denotative meanings really need to be studied to understand the content of poetry which in writing poetry or other literary works uses words that are different from the actual meaning. this is due to beautify his work.
