Abstract

This present study examines two kinds of irregular turn taking based on conversation analysis, interruptions and overlaps in conversation interaction. It explores the various functions of interruptions and overlaps which occurred among the announcer, the guests and the listeners in Bonansa English Show. The data discussed in this study confirm six categories of interruptions and overlaps identified by Wardhaugh (1985): asking for help, breaking up, completing, correcting, disagreeing, and seeking clarification. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The researcher collected the data from observation, interview and documentation. The observation was done to get description about the guest, the announcer and also the conversation in Bonansa English Show. The interview was done to get description about Bonansa Radio Station and Bonansa English Show. The documentation was done to describe how Bonansa English Show is. The result of this study shows that there are some interruptions and overlaps produced by the Announcer, the guests and the listeners occurring in two episodes on Bonansa English Show. The functions of interruption and overlap, which are classified by Wardhaugh and appeared in Bonansa English Show, are breaking up, completing, correcting, disagreeing and seeking clarification. The most irregular turn taking which is often used is interruption, which has function as completing. In radio, actually, irregular turn taking is not to disturb the conversation but, in contrary, it is to avoid the silence between speaking turn because Radio is one of mass media that is only listen its voice (audio mass media).
