Abstract

English is one of the subject matter learned by students who are given any educational level, start from elementary until upper intermediate level. English has four skills that must be mastered, they are: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The researcher found that many students who learnt English still get difficulties while expressing their idea in writing. Writing is a productive skill. Therefore, this study aims to improvewriting on descriptive text by using pictures.Picture is a visual representation or image painted, drawn, photographed, or otherwise rendered on a flat surface. This study used classroom action research. This research was done at X MIA 3 of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. There were 34 students. In classroom action research, there are several procedure of action research: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The researcher used classroom action research to solve their classroom problem to get students‟ better English achievement. From the findings and discussion, the result is using pictures can improve student‟s writing skill, it can be seen from the results of test-II which shows an increase in students‟ score.This study was done one cycle. The criteria of success were 75%-100%. This test is said to successful, if the students get a score of 75 and the average students score is 75 and the percentage of students passing is 75%. In the pre-test, the mean score of the test was 61.1 and in cycle 1 test is 81.4. In pre-test there were 8 students passed and 26 students were failed. Then, in cycle 1 test there were 30 students passed and 4 of students were failed. It means that teaching writing using pictures can improved students‟ writing skill.
