Abstract

This study was aimed at improving the students’ reading comprehension. Reading is one of the language skills that should be mastered by students and have an important role in learning English. It shows that reading is the main key to get the knowledge. The researcher found some problems in learning proccess at SMP YPI Baiturrahman. They are : firstly, the students who have poor reading comprehension. It makes the students confuse to do a conversation. Secondly, the students are not confidence to speak and answering the question English and translate to English in learning process. They will be passive in the classroom. Thirdly , the students who have low motivation and lazy in improving their English reading comprehension. So, the researcher applied Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) technique as learning media. CSR is designed to be used to the expository text, but it can be applied in narrative texts. It involves several groups of students discussing a text and comprehending the text together in many strategic. The objective of the research is to know whether there is a significant of using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) at the second semester of the eight grade of the SMP YPI Baiturrahman Ngoro-Mojokerto in academic year 2018/2019. The present study used a classroom action research design. It was done at SMP Airlangga. There were 22 students, consisted of 10 males and 12 females.. There was two cycle in which every cycle consisted of two until three sessions which involved four steps namely planning, action, observation and reflection. There were two instruments used to collect the data in this study such as: observation and test. Then, the criteria of success are If 80% of students get score at least 75 and if the average score is at least 75. The result of the present study can be shown in cycle I, the completeness students are 40.9% and the average score is 69.41. So, the researcher needed the next cycle. In cycle II, the completeness students are 95.45% and the average score is 79.32. Therefore, there is a significant of using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) at the second semester of the eight grade of the SMP YPI Baiturrahman Ngoro-Mojokerto in academic year 2018/2019.
