Abstract

Translation is a process of translating from a source language to a target language. In a movie there is a language that is used to complete a conversation so that it feels alive by using the original language of the movie. In this movie using Indonesian and translated into English. A subtitle is a text or sentence contained in a movie. Subtitles are usually used to define a sentence spoken by the actors in a movie. This study aimed to know the translation procedure that used on translating English subtitle on Indonesian movie “Kartini”. In this movie English subtitle by Tasha Sastranegara and Robert Ronny. The current research was a qualitative study with the subject on the Indonesian movie “Kartini”, analyze on the Netflix application. The data used in this study amounted to 635 words. The data were collected from transcripe conversation each character on the movie. The data were analyzed using the data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusion. To describe the result on analyzing translation procedure on Kartini movie, the researcher used Peter Newmarks teory. In this research, the researcher used the observation instrument to analyze the English subtitles of the Indonesian movie “Kartini.” The researcher observed the procedure of translating English subtitles. Also in this research for the researching by herself. The result of this research shows that the result of the analysis of translation procedure on English subtitle in Indonesian movie “Kartini”. There are transference (80%), naturalization (80%), cultural equivalent (50%), descriptive equivalent (70%), modulation (70%), synonym (10%),shift or transposition (30%), compensation (10%), and recognized translation (30%). Referring to this results, transference and naturalization procedure that is mostly used on translating on Kartini movie. Synonym and compensation are procedure rarely used on translating on Kartini movie.
