Abstract

ABSTRACT Lailatul Anggraini. (2023). Students’ Grammatical Errors In Writing Procedure Text At Ma Miftahul 'Ula Nganjuk. Thesis. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisor: (I) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd.(II) Dr. Toyyibah, S.S., M.Pd Key word: error analysis, grammatical error, writing, procedure text. Writing is the most difficult skill to master in English for students. They require a lot of practice, and in practice they make mistakes in language. Writing and grammar cannot be separated from each other because grammar is a useful component for creating well-structured writing. For this the reason for the purpose of this research is to find out the error made by students in writing procedure texts based on the theory of Betty S. Azar in social class XII MA Miftahul 'Ula Nganjuk. Furthermore, two research questions are formulated in this study. Namely: 1) what kinds of grammatical errors that are made by students in writing procedure text? and 2) what are the most dominant grammatical error in writing procedure text? This study uses a qualitative descriptive research design. The data is collected from the writings of 'how to make a brooch, how to make a pen holder, etc. The research subjects were students of MA Miftahul 'Ula class XII Social, totaling 17 students. Researchers analyze types of grammatical errors in students' writing based on Betty S. Azar's theory while the steps of analyzing errors were adopted from Ellis theory and percentages. Based on the results of data analysis, it shows that there are still many errors which happened 394. Based on the calculation above, it can be explained that the total capitalization errors are 203 errors with a percentage of 51.5%, punctuation errors are 93 errors with a percentage of 23.8%, spelling errors are 39 errors with a percentage of 10%, spelling errors are 39 errors with a percentage 10%. - plural has 17 errors under 4.3%, article has 10 errors under 2.58%, additional words have 9 errors under 2.2%, verb has 6 errors under 1.5% , choice of words, omission of one word, and unclear meaning as many as 4 errors under the percentage of 1%. Forms of words and incomplete sentences 1 error under the percentage of 0.5% and 0 word order errors under the percentage of 0%. From the calculation of the data, this type of capitalization error is the most dominant type of error made by class XII-Social MA Miftahul 'Ula students with a percentage of 51.5%. While the word order is the least error made by students with a percentage of 0%. So it can be concluded that the use of grammar at the senior high school level in MA Miftahul ‘Ula are in the mechanism. This might be because students are less careful and careless when writing. Students also do not know the mechanism when writing, be it punctuation or something else. So the teacher should consider the appropriate teaching method in writing lessons. Teachers need to encourage their awareness so they can learn to write both grammar and mechanics.
