Abstract

ABSTRACT Mursyid, A.2021. E-Dictionary to Improve Vocabulary Mastery for Children on Preschool Level Thesis. English Department Master Program State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Kediri. Pembimbing: (1) Dr. Toyyibah, M.Pd (2) Dr. Ary Setya Budhi Ningrum, M.Pd. Keywords: Preschool, E-Dictionary, Vocabulary Dictionary is an important tool in learning a foreign language. But, living in a technologically driven world, students are affected by the latest technological products. Electronic Dictionaries (EDs) are becoming increasingly popular as new technological tools of vocabulary learning among L2 learners and as technology proceeds, they will be used more widely by language learners, especially for preschool. This is because electronic dictionaries have the advantages of ease and speed that are missing in paper dictionaries. With E-Dictionary, we easy to understand the meaning and how to pronounce it. And by E-Dictionary, sometimes it has a picture and the synonym or antonym to support the vocabulary. So, we need it too for preschool to improve their vocabulary well. But, the features of existing E-Dictionaries are too small for preschool. Based on the case above, I want to focus on developing E-Dictionary based on MIT App Invertor called “My Vocabulary” special for them was complete with the pictures, sounds, quizzes, reminders, etc. To solve the problem stated above, I need RnD because it is a prime way to do this research, and on the other side, I need the Waterfall model to apply in media development. So, first of all, I use a small scale of RnD into 7 steps, they are (1) Need analysis, (2) Media Development, (3) Expert Validation, (4) Revision, (5) try Out, (6) Second Revision, and the last is Final Product. And based on the result of the research, 90% of parents claimed that the materials and exercise will be easy to understand if the learning process uses interesting media and play a game related to the materials and the level of their children. Meanwhile, 10 % of parents stated that the materials and exercise will be easy to understand if the vocabulary learning process will be taught by the parents. And with a minimum percentage of 90.% at every point of try-out, this app has been successful to attract children’s attention and improving their vocabulary mastery.
