(II) Nur Afifi, M. App. Ling. Ph. D Keywords: Nonverbal Communication, Strategy, ELT Classroom Nonverbal communication is a type of communication in which information is delivered without the use of words. This study aimed to investigate the type of nonverbal communication strategies used by the English teacher of 8 grade of science class of SMPN 1 Ngimbang-Lamongan and the function of using them in ELT classroom. The research applied a descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of the research was an English teacher of 8 grade of science class of SMPN 1 Ngimbang-Lamongan. The research instruments were classroom observation and interview with the teacher. The data collected was analyzed through data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994) namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of this study revealed that there are six types of nonverbal communication strategies used by the teacher in ELT classroom. Those are illustrator, emblem, head movement and posture, facial expression, eye contact, and the last personal space of proxemics. And three communication functions delivered through nonverbal communication strategies; illustrative function, emblematic function, and regulatory function. Teacher should have a strategy when teaching students to make them understand the lesson he conveys. By implementing nonverbal communication strategies, the class becomes conducive and more enjoyable.
