Abstract

Speech is an activity which the speaker speaks in front of people about idea, opinion, information. When doing speech the utterance contains speech act to represent kinds of action. Speech Act are shows that when people use language, they are represent kinds of action. There are some classification lists types of general function performed. That classification such as locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. The Locutionary is what is said, Illocutionary is the act of doing something in saying something, while Perlocutionary is the effect of utterance. Illocutionary act is the most imperative level of action in a speech act. The researcher decide to analyzed the speech act of speech context and focus on two objectives in this study. This thesis was written by focusing on the speech acts which were used by Sundar Pichai in the event of Dear Class 2020 on June 2020. This thesis attempts to analyze the implied meaning found in every utterance and the affect of them to audience of the speech. There are two primary objectives in this research, first to find out the classification and describe the speech acts and second, to find out the most dominant category of speech acts and to know the effect of it. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative method to analysis. The data of this research is in the form of a speech transcript. The theory of speech act by Searle and Yule were applied to analyze the data in the making of this thesis. In speech act theory by Searle and Yule, there are five types of classification, they are: representative, assertive, directive, commisive, expressive and declarative. Thirty seven utterances were selected from speech. The findings showed that the overall relative frequency percentages for the selected speech are: representatieve/assertive 40,5%, directive 32,5%, expressive 16%, commissive 5,5%, and declarative 5,5%. The researcher also found if there are the effects from utterances, it shows in perlocutionary act. The results showed that Sundar Pichai relied more on the utterances that perform representative/assertive act than the other speech acts. It is because representative has most kind of paradigmatics than another category, since he mentioned some advices, motivation, information and support message for the audience.
