Abstract

ABSTRACT Baido’, Wardatul. 2022. An Analysis on the Main Characters’ Personality in The Pursuit of Happyness Movie by Gabriele Muccino. Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisors: (I) Mohammad Muhyidin, M.Pd., (II) Muhammad Afifi, S.Hum., M.Pd. Keywords: Main Character, Personality, Movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. This study aims to find out the personality of the main character in The Pursuit of Happyness movie by Gabriele Muccino and identify the factors that influence the personality itself. This study focuses on analyzing the personality of the main character, Chris Gardner using the “Big Five” theory by Paul Costa and Robert McCrae. They are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. In this study, the researcher also identifies the factors that influence the personality of human. The factors consist of the internal factor (endogen) and external factor (hexogen). This study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were derived from the movie script of The Pursuit of Happyness movie by downloading on the internet. There are three steps to analyze the data. The first step is selecting and focusing the data related to the main character's personality, Chris Gardner based on the “Big Five” theory by Paul Costa and Robert McCrae. Then, creating a narrative display by taking the data from pictures, actions, or conversations related to the main character's personality. The last step is analyzing and explaining the data about the main character's personality based on the theory, and then making a conclusion about it. The result shows that the researcher found 28 data. There are 4 openness personalities, 7 conscientiousness personalities, 3 extraversion personalities, 3 agreeableness personalities, and 11 neuroticism personalities. The researcher also found the factors that influence the personality of the main character, Chris Gardner. The factors consist of the internal factor (endogen) and external factor (hexogen). The internal factors consist of the heredity features relating to physic that cannot be found by the researcher, the psychological features relating to physicalstate (temperament), and the heredity features of the character. Theexternal factors consist of the family of the main character, the job of the main character, and the environment around the main character.
