Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisor: (I) Dr. Toyyibah, S.S., M.Pd, (II) Nur Afifi, M.AppLing, Ph.D. Keywords: Type of illocutionary act, illocutionary functions 1RDP &KRPVN\¶V Speech Illocutionary act is an act of doing something. It is related to the aim of speakre¶s utterances. This research was about illocutionary acts analysis in a speech by Noam Chomsky who talked about coronavirus deseas. Noam Chomsky is a linguist from United State of America. This research was conducted in order to know the types of illocutionary acts and the functions of each types that were conveyed in a speech by Noam Chomsky. The reseach used a descriptive qualitative method to describe, explain, and analyze the types of illocutionary acts and its functions using illocutionary acts theory by John R. Searle. This research analyzed 132 data that were collected from a content video which was uploaded on YouTube Channel named Motivation Madness entitled What Everyone Needs to Know about Covid-19. From the analysis, the researcher found four types from five of illocutionary types used by Noam Chomsky. They were 65% of representative or assertive, 26% of directive, 7% of expressive, and 2% of declaration. In this study, it was found that the dominant type which was used by Noam Chomsky was representative or assertive since this study found that the speech of Noam Chomsky consisted of many information that were given to the viewer. Meanwhile, the most dominant function of illocutionary acts that was used by him was reporting function. In conclusion, from the analysis the researcher concluded the intention of Noam Chomsky¶s speech about covid-19 was about his warning to the people that we much act decisively to resolve the threat of covid-19 which is also accompanied by other threats such as the threat of nuclear war and global warming.
