Abstract
Speaking is the most important skill to master among foreign learners due to the demand of social life such as requirement for a job. Mastering advanced speaking skill allowed them to experience effective communication. In order to achieve the speaking goals, many of students in Indonesia have done some ways, for instance taking an English course. An informal place that has become acknowledged for its endowed English methods. Kampung Inggris, Language Center is a well-known place for EFL (English Foreign Learners) to take course. They succeed yielding many capable people for English. The study was approached through case study which primarily focused on Proficiency class students. The objectives of the study tried to find out the students’ difficulties and their overcoming strategies. As well as the significant strategies used by high and low proficiency students. There are 8 participant who had been gave consent. Observation and interview were used as the research instruments. The participants were observed by the researcher during leaning activities. The participants were questioned about the speaking difficulties and strategies which they employed during the class. The interview was done after the observation. The researcher obtained three findings refer to the research objectives. The first is the students encountered linguistics and non-linguistics difficulties, which were lack of vocabulary, difficult pronunciation, accuracy, fluency, unfamiliar topics, low participations, and difficult to understanding. The second is the students employed 9 strategies, which are switching to native language, using paraphrase, seeking help, repeating, ignoring, avoiding, pausing, adjust the meaning, using manuscript, and using approximation. The third, the difference between high and low proficiency students are high proficiency students tend to be active and have high initiation than low proficiency students. Finally, the research comes to enrich the overcoming strategies which are negotiated learning and ignoring.
