Abstract

Keywords : Translation Quality Assesment, Idiomatix Expression, Sitcom, Friends season 5 Idiomatic expression as a part of a specific language is not easy to be understood by foreign or non-native speaker. The translation of idiom also need to be done carefully to maintain its meaning in the target language. The translator need to be aware of the many forms idiom comes in and pay attention to the quality of their works. This research investigates idiomatic expression found in 4 best episodes of American famous sitcom ‘Friends’ season 5 on Netflix. The TV series Sitcom ‘Friends’ is considered to be one of the big 3 best sitcom of all time. This research is conducted by using qualitative method; content analysis. It covers two research questions; 1) the types of idiomatic expression and 2) translation quality assessment; accuracy, acceptability and readability of those idiom in the Indonesian subtitle. In analyzing the type of idiomatic expression, the theory by McCharty &O’Dell (2002) is used. This theory consist of seven types of idiomatic expression. The result of the research shows that among all idioms found in the series the most dominate types of idiom is Verb + Object/complement (and/or Adverbial). Followed far by Compound type, Prepositional Phrase types, Whole Clause or Sentence and Binomials. Regarding the translation quality assessment of the subtitle in Netflix. The theory presented by Nababan, et. al. (2012). According to an expert rater, rates accuracy and acceptability, and two respondents, rate readability of the said idiomatic expression. Thus, the data is then being measured to find out the TQA average point by the theory also presented by Nababan et. al. (2012). This very point which is 2.61, is then categorized by the theory of TQA quality category presented by Ginting (2019). The score 2.61 fall into the scale 1.68-2.67, the second or medium category. This category consist of quite accurate translation, quite acceptable translation and medium readability level.
