Abstract

Advisors: Ima FitriyahM.Pd.I&Drs.Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd., M.H Keywords: TPR, vocabulary, picture Teaching vocabulary to young learners is not equal with teaching vocabulary for adult learners. Because of this, the teacher should be creative to motivate young learners in learning vocabulary. So, the teacher needed to be aware of use teaching method to suit the class.Using a combination of total physical response with picture media is proposed because this method can make students more enthusiastic, not bored, and the learning atmosphere is fun. This is hope that every students’ learning style can be fulfilled with combination between TPR and picture media. Through this method, students can learn and memorize vocabulary easily through gestures. This study was aimed atimproving young learners’ vocabulary mastery through TPR technique with picture media. The research was conducted at MI Nurul Ulum in academic year 2021/2022. There were 20 students of fifth grade as the subject of research. The research employed classroom action research through some research procedures: the writer conducted observation to seek students' problem and conducted preliminary test to measure students' vocabulary mastery. Then, the researcher did the cycle 1, and continued with cycle 2; each cycle conducted in 3 meetings. There were three set of tests were used as research instrument, namely preliminary test, cycle test 1, and cycle test 2. The result showed that, preliminary study got 82,15 of average score and 65% of percentage students who passed KKM. Cycle 1 got 84,8 of average score and 60% percentage or 12 students who passed KKM. The last in cycle 2, all of the students passed the KKM with 86 of average score. The students’ activities in cycle 1 when using TPR technique with picture media are categorized as fair with a percentage of 54,1%. The students’ activities in cycle 2 when using TPR technique with picture media are categorized as excellent with percentage of 87,5%. It means that using TPR technique with picture media can increase students' activity in learning vocabulary. Both students’ perceptions and feelings after learning vocabulary using TPR technique with picture media reach 75%- 100%. It means that, the students enjoy, happy, and understand English vocabulary easily because they are experiencing the real activities. Thus, researchers concluded using Total Physical Response with picture media can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. Students were interested in learning vocabulary and became active, more enthusiastic when discussing about the material, and participated in finding a new vocabulary related with nouns and verbs on whiteboard in order to remember and keep their vocabulary.
