Abstract

The title of this research is Improving Speaking Skill of the Students of MA HM Tribakti By Using Drill Method. I did this CAR in MA HM Tribakti because the students’ speaking skill in this class was under the minimum score (SKM). It can be seen from the result of the pre test where only 13 students out of 40 pass the pre- test. The purpose of conducting this class room action research in which was used drill method were: The teacher can improve the strategy and the quality of learning speaking. The teacher discovers an appropriate way to improve the speaking skill using drill method. The students can improve their speaking skill. This research used qualitative approach to get the data and to do the analysis. The research was conducted at MA TRIBAKTI Lirboyo. The subject of the research was the students of class Science 1 at the academic year 2012-2013. They were chosen as the subject of the study because the third grade was being prepared for the UN, while the first grade students were adapting with new situation from SMP/MTS to MA. The total students of the class were 40 female students. The research instruments were test, observation, and discussion. The test employed a set of questions that related to certain material. Observation was used observation checklist to obtain the data about the students’ participation during the teaching and learning process. Discussion with collaborator used the observations result. The researcher analyzed the descriptively data obtained from each cycle of CAR. Then the researcher found out the trend occurred during the teaching and learning process. The first cycle of the class room action research was not successful. Because there were 14 out of 40 students were failed to get 75 in their evaluation test and 26 others were successful to get 75. It means 35% of the students failed and 65% of the students were successful to reach the target score. The result of second cycle was 7 out of 40 students were failed to get 75 in their evaluation test and 33 others were successful to get 75. It means 17.5% of the students failed and 82.5% of the students were successful to reach the target score. Therefore, it could be concluded that the class room action research in the second cycle was successful and using drill method can increase the students speaking skill. The students’ activities from the first cycle to the second cycle were consistent to keep their good activities because the students did 12out of 12 activities from the first cycle to the second cycle. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students did 100% of the activities during the implementation of the drill method.
