Abstract

Speaking learning strategy is the most frequently discussed among various language learning strategies. Speaking is one of the skills that students must master. The skill is considered difficult because speaking is a crucial part of the second language and is effective in establishing social interaction. The researcher found that many students who learned to speak have difficulties such as low vocabulary and not confidence because there is no right strategy to deal with these problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Talking Chips Strategy on students’ speaking skills. This study used a quasiexperimental design which has a pre-test of one meeting, treatment of two meetings, and a post-test of one meeting. The population in this study were seventh-grade students at MTs Maarif NU Bacem. Samples were taken in two classes. Class VII A as an experimental, and class VII B as control. Both of them consist of 25 students. In collecting data, researchers used pretest and posttest instruments. The test instrument was an oral test. After giving the post-test, the researcher then analyzed the data using SPSS 26. The results of this study were analyzed using the ANCOVA test. The results of the analysis on Kolmogorov-Smirnov show that the data is normally distributed. Levene test showed both groups have the same ability. The result is p(0.766)>(0.05). Then, the results of the homogeneity regression showed that there was no interaction between the pretest covariate and the independent variable, with a p-value (0.290)>α (0.05). The ANCOVA output test showed that the significance value of p (0.001)<(0.05), meaning that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the Talking Chips Strategy is effective in improving students’ speaking skills.
